PAPER DESIGN
My graduation thesis at the Politecnico of Milan explores the use of paper and cardboard as structural materials. The idea of researching weak materials in construction origins from the study of Shigeru Ban’s architecture, an architecture of paradox. The main topic of this work is lightness: I studied the material’s quality of being light in weight, but also its ephemeral character, exploring projects which are both weak and strong, temporary and permanent.
The thesis ends with the structural analysis of a paper arch. The arch reaches a maximum height of 7m and has a span of 22m.
